The Lord of the Rings is an epic of high-fantasy by Professor J.R.R. Tolkien. Set in Middle-earth, LOTR arose as a sequel to Tolkien’s The Hobbit. Tolkien commenced writing LOTR in 1937, and it was published first in three volumes in 1954 and 1955 and then as a single volume in 1968 (as Tolkien originally intended). LOTR has won many literary awards and is one of the most beloved works of 20th century literature and best-selling books ever written, having been translated into over 50 languages.
